Aside from getting into the entire biology and habits of bats, lets just say that we have 2 species in Massachusetts, the small brown and the big brown, and the both share many habits and behaviors,

there are many resources for bats information on the Internet, unfortunately much of it is misinformation and some can be overwhelming,

There are different types and different degrees of bat issues in residential structures, an example might be that you would not want a maternal colony established in your attic, females return to the same spot each spring and have their young early in June and each female born there will do the same which means that a maternal colony has the potential to nearly double in size each year and once the numbers get high the colony grows rapidly

At that point the droppings build up and the smell will become worse each summer

Another type of issue may be that male bats or bachelors are simply day roosting during the summer months, they will often congregate in small groups sometimes not more than a handful, they would be found in an attic or under the eves or shutters and usually in the neighborhood of a maternal colony
